Concealed behind the Kalsmunt Gate in Wetzlar stands the old administration building of company Leitz. Built around the turn of the century, it brings to mind a legendary meeting here in summer 1924. In the building’s conference room, the developers Barnack and Berek, the two production managers August Bauer and Rudolf Zak as well as financial director Henry Dumur were sitting around the oval oak table talking about the future of Leica and the serial production of their first 35 mm camera. Finally, Ernst Leitz II stated: “Hereby I decide: We will risk it.”
